The "AI-assisted attacks" framing is correct but understates the structural shift. The actual change is that the cost of mounting a moderately sophisticated attack — previously the rate-limiting input — has collapsed. Defensive economics have not adjusted at the same pace. The gap between "what attackers can now do for $100" and "what defenders are configured to catch" is wider in May 2026 than at any point in the last decade. Closing that gap is now budget-line work, not optional.
