Microsoft Build 2026 lands June 2-3. Agent infrastructure is the theme.
Build runs June 2-3 with Satya Nadella's keynote opening day one. Foundry IQ, Fabric IQ, and Azure HorizonDB are already announced. The expected Copilot Studio deep-dive will determine whether Microsoft's agent story is real or just demoware.
Microsoft Build 2026 runs June 2–3 with Satya Nadella's keynote on day one [Build event]. The pre-show announcements have been substantial.
── What's already shipped ──
- Foundry IQ — connector layer between Foundry models and external data sources
- Fabric IQ — equivalent for Fabric, Microsoft's data platform
- Azure HorizonDB — AI-optimised database with built-in vector indexing
- Anthropic Claude in Foundry (April 27, see TX_018)
- Copilot Studio multi-agent orchestration updates [Microsoft blog]
── What to expect at Build ──
Three agendas are visible from the public sessions list:
- Agent infrastructure productionisation. Microsoft is positioning Azure as the agent-runtime cloud. Expect deep-dives on AgentCore-equivalent primitives plus evaluation tooling.
- Copilot ecosystem expansion. Copilot Studio is the platform play. The bet is that enterprise agent development happens inside Copilot Studio rather than custom code.
- Developer productivity narratives. GitHub Copilot Agent Mode at GA (TX_024) plus deeper Visual Studio integration.
── Why it matters ──
Build keynotes are the primary venue for Azure-Foundry-Copilot architectural announcements. If Microsoft has a credible answer to "how do enterprises operate AI agents in production" beyond demoware, this is where it shows up.
The expected pressure points:
- Real eval and observability primitives for agents in production. AWS has them in AgentCore. Microsoft needs to match.
- Pricing transparency for Copilot agents at scale. Microsoft's per-seat pricing has been opaque on agent invocation costs.
- Open-weight model availability in Foundry. Llama, Mistral, DeepSeek all available alongside Claude and GPT would close the multi-vendor argument completely.
── Editor's take ──
Build 2026 will be evaluated on a single question: did Microsoft ship usable agent infrastructure or just rebranded Copilot demos? The pre-Build announcements suggest substance, but the keynote is where vendor reality gets tested. We'll cover the keynote live.
