Forward-deployed engineers surge at OpenAI, Google Cloud

OpenAI and Google Cloud scale forward-deployed engineer teams, with OpenAI expanding from two to over ten engineers and Google Cloud opening 59 positions, as the role surges across AI firms in 2025-2026 [Dev.to] [The New Stack].

OpenAI, Google Cloud, and other AI vendors have announced new forward-deployed engineer (FDE) hiring programs in Q1-Q2 2026, scaling teams from single digits to dozens of engineers across multiple continents [Dev.to] [MIT NANDA] [The New Stack]. The role, coined “Delta” at Palantir in the early 2010s, now appears in over 30 job boards with titles ranging from “Applied FDE” to “AI Deployment Engineer.” OpenAI expanded from two to more than ten FDEs in eight cities and launched a $4 billion deployment subsidiary in early 2026 [The New Stack]. Google Cloud opened 59 FDE positions in its first week, with salary bands from $127 k to $265 k depending on seniority. The surge aligns with MIT’s State of AI in Business 2025 finding that 95 % of enterprise GenAI pilots deliver no measurable P&L impact, citing a gap between model capability and production-grade integration as the primary blocker [MIT NANDA].

The real cost driver is the engineering effort required to embed models in messy enterprise stacks [MIT NANDA]. FDEs close that loop by delivering end-to-end production systems and feeding field intel back into core product roadmaps. Companies are targeting a ratio of one FDE per $2 M–$5 M of ARR influenced. Palantir’s own FDE-heavy model grew to $2.8 B+ revenue after scaling its delta teams, proving the ROI can be measured in accelerated deal cycles and expansion revenue [Dev.to].

Surveyed postings show only ~8 % of FDE listings mention OTE, and none carry sales quotas, distinguishing the role from traditional sales engineering [The New Stack]. Instead, compensation focuses on base salary plus equity, attracting senior engineers who prefer ownership over quota-driven incentives.
