BBEdit 16 released with Git integration and AppleScript upgrades
BBEdit 16 lands on macOS with deeper source control support, enhanced scripting, and performance fixes for developers
Bare Bones has released BBEdit 16, updating its veteran macOS text editor with stronger source control integration and expanded AppleScript support [Bare Bones]. The release targets professional developers who rely on automation and version control, adding inline Git conflict markers, improved branch management, and faster repository status updates.
The update includes syntax highlighting for modern JavaScript and TypeScript syntax, along with smarter code completion for C-family languages [Bare Bones]. Performance gains come from optimized file loading for large logs and multi-gigabyte text files—common in data processing and log analysis workflows.
UI refinements include updated toolbar icons and better dark mode consistency across panels. The search tool now preserves search history between sessions, and the CSV viewer handles escaped quotes and multiline fields more reliably.
Bare Bones also fixed long-standing bugs in FTP/SFTP handling and improved stability when editing files over network mounts. Scripting enhancements allow AppleScript and shell scripts to trigger editor actions more reliably, including multi-step automation of file transformations.
BBEdit 16 is available for free trial or purchase directly from Bare Bones. Users with a BBEdit 15 license qualify for a discounted upgrade.
